Rediscovering the Lost Nathan Harrison Shotgun
Lunch and Learn: The History Center has hosted the exhibition Nathan Harrison: Born Enslaved, Died a San Diego Legend since spring 2021. As we enter the final stretch of what has been a fascinating look at both the the story of this famed Palomar Mountain homesteader Nathan Harrison, and the process of discovery, we are proud to host one final program featuring Prof. Mallios, as well as archaeology grad student Jamie Bastide.
Dr. Mallios and Jamie Bastide will discuss the recent rediscovery of Harrison’s lost shotgun and place this extraordinary find in the context of self-armament, masculinity, and identity in late 19th-century San Diego County. Drawing on recent insights from the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, a 20-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts and revealed numerous new insights into this legendary local pioneer, they will also detail how the weapon was relocated and its significance for the region.
Ticket price includes lunch.
