El Cuefvo Adob Hike
4206 Sorrento Valley Boulevard, San Diego, 92121
Cost: Free
The El Cuervo Adobe was likely built shortly after 1837, the year in which Old
Town statesman Francisco Alvarado was gifted land in Penasquitos Canyon by his
old friend Francisco Ruiz, the commandante of the San Diego Royal Presidio,
whom he had long cared for. The El Cuervo was built near a wetlands water
source, or cienega, which unfortunately was often too saline for good use. On this hike, get a close up view of the adobe ruins and also visit
Norwood Brown’s cattle corral where twice a year, Brown, a former sickly La Jolla
High School science teacher, who dreamt of being an old time tough-as-nails
cowboy, rounded the baby boy cows (veal) of his herd to be sent up to the Talon
Packing House in Escondido.
