Stray Dog (1949. 122 minutes): Akira Kurosawa’s pulpy, noirish police procedural is considered his first masterwork. During a sweltering summer in rubble-strewn Tokyo, a rookie detective (Toshirō Mifune) finds to his shame that his gun has been stolen and used in a murder.
