“I think of the bass as an orchestra,” says jazz bassist Mark Dresser, who’ll present selections his upcoming solo album Tines Of Change on May 8 at UCSD’s The Loft. The evening includes a solo performance by Dresser, followed by a second set featuring poet Jerome Rothenberg. Due May 5, the album was performed on experimental four-string and five-string basses crafted for Dresser by Colorado-based luthier Kent McLagan. “I realized that the bass has so many different and distinct voices,” says Dresser, “I wanted to be able to access them and make them speak to one another.”
