Art for the People: Paintings from the Dijkstra Collection
Art for the People: WPA-Era Paintings from the Dijkstra Collection explores the role of the arts in times of economic turmoil. On the 90th anniversary of the Works Progress Administration, this this timely exhibition offers a unique perspective on American artists from the 1930s and 1940s echoing today’s social justice discourse, with a particular focus on the contribution of California artists, who, too often, have been omitted from the WPA narrative. Drawn from the collection of San Diegans Sandra and Bram Dijkstra, the collection offers a panoramic and unique look at the diversity of artistic expression that flourished during this period of hardship. From social realism to American expressionism, this exhibition features 46 works from the East, Midwest, and West, with a strong component of work by California artists. The collection is a timely reminder of the role of the arts in society during times of economic turmoil. Opening celebration on June 24, and an on-site panel discussion will be staged October 7. The exhibit will be on display from June 24 through November 5. Members free, visitors $15.
