The High Renaissance in Rome & Florence
In art history, the High Renaissance was a brief period of brilliant artistic production in the Italian states. Great artistic achievements were particularly strong in Rome, the capital of the Papal States and in Florence. Most art historians believe the dates of the High Renaissance were roughly 1495-1520. Some of the most noted artists, architects, and sculptors of this time period were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante. With regard to High Renaissance painting, significant achievements were made during this era including advancements in linear perspective, realistic depictions of both physical and psychological features, along with the use of chiaroscuro and sfumato. These attainments along with work of some of the most gifted artist of the High Renaissance will be discussed in this presentation.
