Poetry & Popular Culture
Don Draper, comic books, and Mickey Mouse. Coke-a-Cola and Jay-Z. The worlds of pop culture and poetry are not exclusive. Since the 1950s, poets have been weaving aspects of the popular landscape into their poems. In this workshop, we will read and discuss inspiring work by iconic and contemporary poets, such as Frank O’Hara and Kate Durbin, who craftily incorporate influential and funny references to the vibrant worlds around them. This is also a generative workshop; writers will be provided with several prompts that will meld the personal and the popular. All levels are welcome. Please bring a pen and paper/journal. You will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours before the start of class. Be sure to check your Spam/Junk folders just in case! If you sign up less than 24 hours before the start of the class, please email Kristen at [email protected] for your link. With Heather Sweeney
