Taiko: History & Art of Japanese Drumming
The free Discovery Concert Series presents Taiko: The History and Art of Japanese Drumming. Buddhist Temple of San Diego (BTSD) Taiko is an intergenerational taiko group (one of our families has three generations and several have two) made up of members of the Buddhist Temple of San Diego. The temple practices Jodo Shinshu Buddhism and has been a place of cultural preservation for Japanese and Japanese Americans in San Diego since 1926. BTSD Taiko was originally founded in the 1980s and after a hiatus the group reconvened in 2007. The goal of its drumming is not necessarily perfection for performance, but to put into practice mindfulness, oneness and gratitude. BSTD Taiko has performed at numerous community events including local festivals, cultural celebrations and library programs. The Discovery series of concerts at the library serves to educate the public about various music forms and to expand the opportunity for local musicians to perform and provide insights to their music.
