Justin McHugh: Memento Mori
9500 Gilman Drive, San Diego, 92093
Cost: Free
Justin McHugh is a new artist out of UCSD. Through collage, video installation, and appropriation, McHugh deconstructs the myth of the Marlboro Man-- a truly American figure, manufactured to represent freedom, manifest destiny, and rugged masculinity-- while simultaneously concealing and coercing a cancerous, addictive product. The exhibition is a reflection on our perceived power over the landscape, exploring the consequences of manifest destiny, and exposing the semiotics of advertising and addiction. Memento Mori marks the artist's latest foray into video and sculptural installation using appropriated media, found objects, television sets, and projection. Adam D. Kamil Gallery
