Contemporary Art & Social Responsibility
This special presentation, with Robert Pincus as the moderator, will feature Liza Lou talking about contemporary art and social responsibility. Liza Lou first gained attention in 1996 when her room-sized sculpture “Kitchen” was shown at the New Museum in New York. “Kitchen” was seen as a monument to the long unacknowledged contribution of women's daily labor and also established Lou’s lifelong exploration of materiality, social practice, and confinement. In 2005, Lou moved to South Africa to determine if her studio practice could have long-term social consequence. She is currently developing a major artwork and sustainable employment project within a women’s prison in Belém, Brazil, as well as a women’s project in Mumbai, India. The lecture is part of the Joyce Cutler-Shaw Dialogues in Art & Architecture series.
