Creating Compelling Characters With Heart
What makes a character memorable? Who is the most memorable character you have read? Why do we remember some and not others? We can write a complex, magical storyline but authentic, relatable characters can breathe life into that story. How our characters react to unfolding events can make the biggest impact on a reader, starting on page one. Whether you are writing short fiction, a novel, memoir, or creative nonfiction, compelling characters can draw your reader in and make them care enough to read on. In this 3-hour workshop with Sylvia Mendoza for beginner/intermediate levels, we get to the heart of your character. Come prepared with a storyline and a character to develop from the inside out. Using a variety of writing exercises, we will work on their darkest secrets, conflict and motivation—and add rich depth and details through emotion, secondary characters, and setting.
