Memorial Day Service
Greenwood Memorial Park & Mortuary in San Diego, the final resting home for hundreds of U.S. veterans, hosts its 97th annual Memorial Day service beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 28. The American Legion-Post 6 of San Diego will lead this year’s ceremony, which honors and memorializes the lives of veterans. Lt. Kevin L. Johnson, Chaplin Corps of the U.S. Navy, will address guests in memory of loved ones who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service includes a wreath-laying presentation, singing of the national anthem, readings of Logan’s General Order, Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Lincoln’s condolence letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby and a “Taps” buglers performance. Complimentary hot dogs and light refreshments will be available. Memorial Day remembers those who died while serving our country in the Armed Forces. The practice of honoring our fallen began as Decoration Day after the Civil War when families of both Union and Confederate forces began to decorate the graves of the fallen. In 1971, Decoration Day became Memorial Day in an effort to remember all who died in service to our nation.
