History Talk: The Declaration of Sentiments of 1848
330 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92101
Cost: Free
Before #MeToo or the ERA there was the Declaration of Sentiments 170 years ago. Join Women's Museum of California board member Anne Hoiberg for a discussion of this famous freedom document that outlined the rights that American women were entitled to as citizens and that emerged from the Seneca Falls Convention, the first documented women’s rights convention held in upstate New York in 1848. Modeled on the Declaration of Independence, it caused controversy and was met with significant opposition to its publication. It is one of the first statements of the political and social repression of women and marked the start of the women’s rights movement in the United States.
