German Lopez
5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, 92008
Cost: $25 - $30
The music of the Canary Islands comes to Carlsbad with Germán López, master of the timple (tim-play), a diminutive 5-stringed instrument. Germán López is from Gran Canaria, an island making up an archipelago off the coast of Africa, pertaining to the nation of Spain. At the age of seven he entered the Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas, acquiring an eventual master’s degree in the latter in 2001. The timple (pronounced tim-play) is a small 5-stringed instrument intrinsic to music of the Canary Islands. Unlike the ukulele that it resembles, it produces a full, resonant sound despite its high timbre, possibly due to its rounded back.
