North County Black History Month Celebration
Secondary Missionary Baptist Church, 5301 Mare Road, Oceanside
Cost: $7.50 - $15
Music scholar and historian Dr. Kimberly Hawkins presents Music of Black Protest as part of North County’s Black History Month Celebration, a musical lecture and multi genre sing-along based in negro spirituals, blues, and gospel. The lecture series, recitals, and sing-alongs were created to preserve, share, and expose Americans and the world to the long and storied history of African American music in the formulation of American culture and how African American traditions continue to influence and permeate American society to this day. Dr. Hawkins earned her doctorate in music from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she was also a lecturer on music in African American Culture for the Department of Black Studies.
