Joyce Cutler-Shaw Dialogues in Art & Architecture
Since 1991, Dialogues in Art and Architecture has been a program of free public talks on the experimental edge of new art—particularly across disciplines—and architecture, addressing architectural design, urban planning, public culture, our changing ecology, and the artist’s perspective on these issues, as models of possibilities for the San Diego environment. The series consists of lectures by outstanding professionals of national/international reputation with art critic Robert Pincus as moderator. April 25: The Aesthetics Of Resistance Sally Yard, PhD, Professor of art history, USD Can Bilsel, PhD, Professor of architecture, USD Robert Pincus, Moderator Reflecting on the Gezi Park protests of 2013 in Istanbul, Can Bilsel explores the emerging iconography of resistance in public spaces, often depicted as a lone, vulnerable figure in the public square. He will provide a series of readings of this iconography as seen through the intersecting discourses of secularism, body politic, transgender activism, and resistance to urban gentrification in Turkey. San Diego / Tijuana, where the Americas converge, has proved a fraught site of action and art. Sally Yard will consider projects that have been made in contested spaces of San Diego/Tijuana, from Chicano Park to the Border wall.
