Capitalism and Social Origins of the Las Vegas Massacre
The recent mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival which killed dozens and wounded hundreds of people has shocked the public. Predictably, no corporate politician or commentator has had anything of substance to say about this horrific event. In particular, no one in the self-satisfied political and media establishment dares to address the social context in which such massacres have now become an increasingly common occurrence.
The Las Vegas massacre, far from being the unpredictable result of individual madness, has taken place in a terminally diseased capitalist order. The reality in which these recurring tragedies occur has been one of unrelenting violence and social decay, including a quarter century of constant war, 16 years of the fraudulent and unconstitutional "War on Terror," savage police brutality and militarization, the growth of social inequality, and the collapse of the social position of tens of millions of working people across the country.
