Dr. Ann Bowles: Are Killer Whales Big Dolphins?
American Cetacean Society San Diego is excited to welcome Dr. Ann Bowles and her presentation, When It Comes to Communication, Are Killer Whales Big Dolphins?
Dr. Ann Bowles is a Senior Research Scientist and leads the Animal Behavior and Senses program at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. She has been studying the development and social context of killer whale vocal behavior since 1986. Work in her lab is showing that killer whales learn elements of their repertoire and that particular classes of calls are paired with specific behaviors. She will describe gaps in what we know about killer whale communication and present hypotheses about similarities and differences among delphinids.
The American Cetacean Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1967 to protect whales, dolphins, porpoises, and their habitats through public education, research grants, and conservation actions. Members-only dinner with the speaker at 5 p.m. prior to the lecture. RSVP: [email protected].
