Kinetoscope: The Pinup Boudoir Edition
In 1893 Thomas Edison invented the Kinetoscope, a kind of "peep show" machine which was like the first burlesque comedy film. Many of the first kinetoscope films featured female vaudeville performers doing sinuous dances revealing their knees and thighs. One of the most interesting things about these films is that even though they revealed performers' bodies, they also showed the undressing act's awkward qualities which seemed to encourage the undressing women to adopt comic personas. Look into our Peep Show and what do you see?
