SD Fringe Festival: The Beautiful Machine
2004 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $10
In an unnamed, futuristic city, people without body parts are denied the right to receive prosthetics. Only Ben Phoenix has the skill to create a computer system lthat would substitute the most important organ a human can have: the heart, "the beautiful machine." Kudos to the powerhouse singing-storytelling of Chris Chiles' Phoenix, to the striking Lindsey Denham in dangerous stilettos, who assumes the role of leader of the SciFi city, and to Kim Moller, whose singing voice is a revelation. But the music drowns out the singers, especially those without mikes. And the music and lyrics of Pop Theater's first act can use re-working. Worth watching.
