Jurassic Park Technology to Save Rhinos
7555 Draper Avenue, San Diego, 92037
Cost: Free
The northern white rhinoceros species is on the brink of extinction. There are only three remaining on the planet, and they cannot reproduce naturally. Hoping to revitalize the population, researchers have an audacious plan to save the species by transforming cells from frozen storage into sperm and egg cells, which would then be used for in vitro fertilization. As part of the project, Tom Nguyen, Research Associate in Genetics at San Diego Zoo Global, will discuss his research in collaboration with The Scripps Research Institute on transforming cells from the Frozen Zoo into stem cells to be used for IVF to repopulate the species.
