Starlight Parade & Children's Faire
"This traditional kickoff for the holiday season has been delighting children and families for more than 50 years." One of only two nighttime parades in San Diego County, the Starlight Parade begins at 6 p.m. with marching bands, children’s choirs, military veterans, drum corps, firetrucks, youth sports teams and more – all decked out in colorful twinkling lights.
New this year is a free Children’s Faire in Memorial Park from 2-5 p.m., preceding the parade. The fair will feature the popular snow hill in the park – a hill of real snow for children to sled down. There also will be a gingerbread bounce house, a train for children to ride on, and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The city’s Library staff will be holding holiday-themed story times, with live storybook characters. The library also will host several science and technology labs – one teaches about “the science of snow.” Recreation staff will lead the fun at the snow hill and train, and provide arts and craft activities for children, such as decorating ornaments. All children’s activities are free of charge.
There also will be craft vendors on hand, as well as a variety of snack foods for sale, including tacos, kettle corn, and Kona-style shave ice. As a bonus for the adults, 3 Punk Ales Brewing Co. on Third Avenue will be featuring a special Starlight Parade beer.
