Rise Above Plastics
9883 Pacific Heights Boulevard, San Diego, 92121
Cost: Free
Since the discovery in the mid 1980s of high levels of slowly degrading plastics in the ocean’s gyres, there has been a movement to reduce the flow of plastic into the sea. Most of the plastics are tiny particles that are easily consumed and passed through the food chain, creating a toxic environment for everything living in and off the ocean, from tiny mesopelagic species and the fish we consume to sea birds and vegetation. The Surfrider Foundation hosts a discussion, Rise Above Plastics, at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution.
