Recruited in 1942 by an executive order of President Roosevelt, the Montford Point Marines were the first African American Marines. Thousands of black men received basic training at the segregated Camp Montford Point in North Carolina. Between 1942 and 1949, more than 20,000 men were trained at Montford Point. On 27 June 2012, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the Montford Point Marines.
