French Strategy for Winning Local Opinion during Napoleon's Occupation of Egypt
UCSD, La Jolla

“Soft Power and Colonization: Understanding French Strategy."
Christian Donath is assistant professor of political science at the American University in Cairo where he teaches courses on empires, political Islam, and political theory.
His talk comes from a project that explores how liberals in the past have used ideas about persuasion to buttress imperial projects. These notions of persuasion parallel what academics, politicians, and journalists today call 'soft power' and reveal one strategy used by liberals in trying to overcome tensions between liberalism and empire.
