And Then They Were Gone: Passenger Pigeons and Carolina Parakeets in America
2202 S. Coast Highway, Oceanside, 92054
Cost: Free
The talk, by Mike Matherly, is about how at the turn of the 19th Century, one in every four birds in America was a carrier pigeon, and huge flocks of parakeet roamed from Florida to Wisconsin.
Then, within a handful of years, every single passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet was gone -- obliterated from the face of the earth.
Matherly will detail just how America lost two of it's most iconic birds and how we can prevent future catastrophes from happening.
