City Heights Farmers' Market Anniversary Celebration
The City Heights Farmers’ Market will celebrate its fourth anniversary on Saturday, July 14 under the motto “Where Global IS Local.” The celebration will feature the City Heights community’s multi-ethnic make-up with a colorful range of cultural song and dance. Performers include a Chinese lion dance troupe and a mariachi band. The public has a chance to win market gift certificates by entering a “Summer Salad” cooking contest. Children will be entertained by a variety of arts & crafts activities and face painting. There will, of course, also be a big birthday cake.
The City Heights Farmers’ Market opened in 2008 as the first farmers’ market in a low-income community in San Diego, and the first EBT (food stamp)-accessible market in the County. It has been held weekly on Saturdays from 9am-1pm for the last four years. The market has been hugely successful in providing fresh, healthy and culturally appropriate food choices to local residents and reflects. The market’s Fresh Fund program, a double value coupon program, offers incentives for recipients of food stamps, WIC or SSI to assist them in purchasing locally grown produce at the market, while its Kids’ Korner provides educational activities focusing on proper nutrition, physical activity and healthful lifestyles to the community’s youngest members in a playful setting.
The celebration coincides with regular market hours, from 9 AM to 1 PM, at the market location on Wightman Street between 43rd Street and Fairmount Avenue. Free parking in the parking structure on 43rd Street.
