"Hindus believe the god Vishnu has descended to Earth on several occasions to save humankind from forces of chaos.... Each time he has assumed a new form called an avatar." Drawing from 175 works of art shown in the recent exhibition "Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior," Brooklyn Museum of Art curator Joan Cummins introduces ancient traditions of celebrating avatars in sculpture, painting, textiles, ritual objects.
