Festival of Sail
Fun kicks off with grand parade of windjammers on San Diego Bay by more than a dozen vessels (September 1, 11am). Best shore viewing from the Maritime Museum, Cabrillo National Monument, Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero. Ships should be docked by 2pm.
September 2-5, tour more than 20 tall ships and other vessels from around the world. Enjoy live entertainment (Eve Selis, Rondstadt Generations, Navy Band Southwest and Chicago Six Jazz), food and drink from dozens of restaurant booths, family activity area, petting zoo, more than 150 festival vendors.
Cannon battles offered September 2-5, departing at 10:30am and 2:30pm. Watch from the deck as combatants fire (blanks) from four deck guns. Mock battles employ same tactics used during the mid- to late 1800s.
During Pirate Ship Adventures, adults and kids take 60-minute adventure cruises aboard the Treasure Seeker. Shore Battery Artillery Team salutes ships with several rounds of fire as they pass by during parade. Unit demonstrates how the guns are cleaned, fire three- and four-pound guns for a “noon salute” each day, and fire authentic 12-pound Civil War era Napoleonic cannons built in 1863.
