404 Third Avenue, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $2
In late 19th- and early 20th-centuries, thousands of young men (and
few young women) left Asia, crossed the ocean to provide for their families. Robert Barde discusses this arduous trans-Pacific journey, and harsh treatment sojourners received during immigration processing in San Francisco between passage of Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 and opening of Angel Island Immigration Station in 1910. Barde is author of Immigration at the Golden Gate: Passenger Ships, Exclusion, and Angel Island. 619-338-9888.
