Selfish Giant began in Connecticut as guitarist Gilberto's project. After moving out west, Gilberto put out an ad on Craigslist looking for bandmates to continue playing Selfish Giant songs. Drummer Anthony Caiazzo responded and brought on bassist Andrew Pincock, another musician he had contacted through Craigslist for another project.
The band released Time To Leave in 2016. "The whole process has been very DIY," Pincock told the Reader. "All of the recording was done by ourselves over the course of a month of weekends in Tony's garage, and we're the only three to appear on the album in any capacity."
"Time To Leave is an album about moving. All three of us are non-native to San Diego, and many of the songs discuss the difficulty of moving away from a place you loved, but also the excitement of being somewhere new."
As for their live shows, "We're pretty goofy when we play. There are coordinated dance moves and all around silliness, so there's that to look forward to at our shows. We don't take ourselves all that seriously and we put on an entertaining show. We also do a folky cover of Drake's 'Hotline Bling' which fits in nicely with our own terrible dancing."
At this writing, the band is no longer active.
