Pianist Richard Thompson has taught music performance, history, jazz performance, and theory at San Diego State University. Born in Scotland, Thompson studied classical piano with Theodore Lettvin at Rutgers University. He has performed with the Harlem Festival Orchestra, the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra, the Aberdeen Chamber Orchestra, and the Boston Orchestra and Chorale.
His opera The Mask in the Mirror concerns the romance between pioneering American black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Ruth Moore, a New Orleans Creole, poet, journalist, and early civil rights advocate. It was premiered in 2012 by Trilogy Opera in Newark, New Jersey.
