Reason to Rebel is a progressive reggae-rock quartet founded by Evan Jones (guitar), Luke Chandler (vocals), Sam Hartjen (bass), and Daniel Zivkovich (drums). "We're a completely DIY band, and our fans & supporters are the reason why we've been able to keep making records and touring the country for over ten years," Chandler tells the Reader.
In August 2010, the band performed at the Sunset Strip Music Festival, along with the Smashing Pumpkins, Slash, and Fergie. Thier self-formed label is called AboveGround Records.
The group is known for its socially conscious lyrics. "When we started [in Bush-era 2005], we had just gone to war and the political climate was ripe for writing music as a form of protest," says lead singer Chandler. "People get brainwashed with advertising."
Drummer Daniel Zivkovich took a hiatus from the band in May 2015, after being offered a management job with Smart and Final, though he remained a member while Alex Pappas of Finch filled in. Later that year, they released their sixth album, This Gun Is Human, produced by Pappas.
According to Chandler, "The record title a lyric in one of the songs, 'This gun is perfect, this gun is human.' It references what our human race has done to this planet, and most other species on it. The artwork was done by an artist from Spain, Mario S. Nevado, who we sought out after seeing his popular piece called Betrayal - A Global Warming Illustration. He chose to create a more organic, or literal, interpretation of the album title." The album was the band's first to be released in a vinyl edition.
