Named after someone who sells dirt seasoned with manure, Night Soil Man played its first gig on Halloween 1987, at an Ocean Beach house party. Their full-length Garden of Delights, featuring a cover painting by Hieronymus Bosch, was released in 1989. It was later re-released on CD with bonus tracks.
The band's rhythm section Mike Kennedy and Mark Trombino later joined with members of Pitchfork to form Drive Like Jehu.
