The Kearny Mesa Concert Band was established at San Diego Mesa College in 1972 as a showcase for older, talented, amateur, and professional musicians. It is now the oldest, continuously playing
community band in San Diego. Although younger musicians are active in the band, the average age is over 55. The band is now a continuing education class of the San Diego Community College District. Many of our members are retired and play music for personal enrichment and social interaction.
The band performs a variety of music, including classic to contemporary pieces, original compositions, Broadway and movie show tunes, as well as traditional marches.
Music Director James Romeo graduated with music degrees from Kent State University (B.S.) and the University of Akron (M.M.). Before teaching at Mesa College, Romeo was Assistant Director of Bands at California State University and Associate Conductor of Bands at the University of Akron. Romeo has also been a saxophonist with the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Saxophone Quartet.
