23 years-old in 2011, Justin “Jaybird” Langford first earned wide notice with his remix of “Black and Yellow,” a song by Pittsburgh-based Wiz Khalifa (who Langford opened for at a February 2009 San Diego gig). After his video for the remix earned over 20,000 YouTube views, his new fans included San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews.
Langford -- whose uncle is noted San Diego rapper Jayo Felony -- was encouraged by his gospel singer parents to begin rapping and freestyling as a teen attending San Marcos High and Rancho Bernardo High. He records much of his music at his father's home in Rancho Bernardo. In 2010, he won first place in L.A.’s How the West Was Won rap contest.
