John January & the Mags has featured January and Scott Evans, both former members of the Gloomcookies and Frank the Baptist. The new band combines melodic songs and expert instrumentals.
In 2007, they began rehearsing with Brandon Shock and added Darrell Keliinoi. After a run of gigs and recording, January was inducted into the San Diego Blues Hall of Fame in summer 2013.
By 2016, January was playing with the John January & Linda Berry Band, with Hoodoo Blues bassist Dave Talbott. However, Talbott passed away late that year.
