Acoustic songstress Emily Drew studied fashion design, marketing and traveled to London where she learned the art of sound engineering; all the while continuing to play open mics. After moving back to Florida, she spent the next few years playing shows and gaining fans but struggled with the feeling that her songs and home recordings were not up to par.
She relocated to San Diego and recorded an EP The Finer Things, released in October 2013, and featuring Alexander Dausch (Lovebirds collaborator and a member of Tiger Milk Imports) playing most all the instruments other than Drew's acoustic guitar. “His style of playing and production tends to be more progressive than mine, and I think it gave the EP a really unique feel while still staying in the realm of modern pop music,” she says.
“Most of the songs were written during my first few years in San Diego,” she says. “Living here has definitely had an impact on my music. More happy songs! It was during those years I realized that the finer things in life are not things, but moments and the people we spend them with. However, songs like ‘Dreaming Away’ [are] about my struggle to get to this point in my career. So it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. You get to see every side of me on this EP.”
