The City Guard Band is a brass band founded in 1880. After appearing at the opening of the Cable Railway in 1890 and at the Cabrillo Celebration in 1892, it was declared the official band of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.
The band gradually disintegrated in the wake of World War I, with many of the players ending up with other local symphonies. In the early 1980s, the City Guard Band was revived. It currently averages 20 to 40 members, all of whom are volunteers, including their music director.
