Captain Viejo features brothers Lance Von Dyl and Mike Von Dyl, whose former group the Accessories earned airplay on KCR, 91X, and KGB. Their next group, Hurl - the Band, featured a third brother, Rusty.
Lance and Mike joined with Matt Flanagan (drums, vocals) to form Captain Viejo. "We’ve all been playing in various bands here in San Diego for the last 30 years," drummer Matt Flannagan (a third grade teacher) told the Reader at the time. "As the youngest in the band, I’ll be turning 50 in August. "We have families, careers, and all that shit would have been rad if it would have happened about 30 years ago. Two out of the three of us are sober now and intend on staying that way."
Their recorded output includes a series of EPs. #2 was recorded by Jeff Forrest (Blink 182) at Doubletime Recording Studio in El Cajon, as was their 2018 followup, #3.
Asked about the band's worst gig, Flanagan mentions a club with "freaky red lights casting an oppressive, ominous, life-sucking glow. Playing at 12 midnight, three people there, two were from the earlier band. Our trooper of a friend Aaron was the other, he’s at most every one of our shows. All three were on their cell phones the whole time."
