22 Kings began as a folk-rock duo featuring Sam Bybee and Sandi King. Friends for over sixteen years, they decided to sing some harmonies during one of Bybee's shows in promotion for his solo album I Hate Pretty Girls. Soon, King quit her career as a chef in San Francisco and Bybee quit managing an upscale bakery in Hollywood to move back to their home town, San Diego.
Walking a fine line between folk, Americana, and indie rock, a self-titled debut album was released in 2014. That was followed by their second major tour, Mohawks Across America, as well as playing NAMM, SXSW, and elsewhere.
As of 2016, King had left 22 Kings to form King Taylor Project with Joshua Taylor.
