Every few months, bartender and musician Drew Andrews (ex- Album Leaf, Via Satellite) curates ZZZZzzz: The Sound of Quiet Punx at Whistle Stop.
The series focuses on San Diego’s more ambient side and artists such as Bjork, Boards of Canada, Nick Drake, Seefeel, Sigur Ros, Ulrich Schnauss, and Aphex Twin.
The fact that last night's headliner, Illuminauts, have garnered limited local press and negligible national attention speaks volumes about San Diego's as-of-yet largely unrecognized experimental live beat scene.
Combining complex rhythms with a pastiche of samples and live instrumentation, the two (and occasionally three) piece Illuminauts are at the forefront of the beat sound which has received international acclaim in Los Angeles with Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup artists such as Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Take, Nosaj Thing, Teebs, Daedelus, Tokimonsta, and Matthewdavid.
