It hardly seems like ten years have already passed since Capricorn Recording Studios first opened in San Diego. The studio at 927 E Street downtown has put together a CD sampler of locals who've recorded there, set to debut on Wednesday, November 16, with nearly a dozen bands and DJs at the Griffin.
Capricorn offers services including recording, mixing, mastering, full demo/ album production, songwriting, and voiceovers. With a vibey and creative space, vintage analog gear, and the latest in digital recording, the Capricorn Team consists of producer, engineer, owner and musician Bryan Stratman (Hyena, Crash Encore); head engineer Josh Mallit (Fing); mastering guru Joe Goodwin (Fing); and studio/project manager, musician Astra Kelly.
Co-released by the Griffin (formerly O'Connell's), the CD features 16 tracks from the Lyon Crowns, Karlos Paez, Tommy Dubs, Astra Kelly, Natalie Rae, Jackson Price, Miss Erika Davies, Ghostbird, Bombay Status, F_Tape, Hyena, Aaron Pridemore, Get Back Loretta, Fing, Creede Johnson, and Vokab Kompany.
"Half of those artists will be performing at the CD release show," says Capricorn studio manager Astra Kelly, who previously worked at local StudioWest. "There's free entry before 9:00 and complimentary apps from Pokez, plus awesome drink specials."
Kelly, who arrived in San Diego in September 2006, has released several albums, including Subtown Rituals, Acoustic Soul Live, and Stones, Bones and Boxes.
Over the next few years, Kelly frequently performed at Dublin Square in the Gaslamp Quarter. Beginning September 2006, Kelly DJ'd at KPRI (102.1). She started with overnights midnight to 5 a.m. before hosting the station's Saturday night Homegrown Hour, featuring local music, from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. After showcasing hundreds of local bands, she stepped down from the gig in May, 2009.
In November 2009, she released the EP Battling the Sun, with cover artwork by local artist Billy Martinez. "The sun is a metaphor for our personal power and confidence and how it's a waste of time to battle ourselves - it's a battle that is impossible to win. Being a musician seems like a battle much of the time, but in the end it is a shared dream, that takes more than just the players to realize. So battling yourself, is like ignoring the bigger picture and the common goal."
Kelly has also been the voice of commercials for outfits such as Starbucks, Motel 6, Southwest Airlines, and the American Diabetes Foundation, to name a few.
“Plus,” she says, “I’ve voiced a ton of stuff for a plastic surgery company. They like me because I'm great at reading medical terms and other big words without even knowing what the heck they mean.”
Her EP Timebomb was released summer 2011. It contains five new band tracks, including a full band version of the title track from the Battling the Sun EP release, plus three remixes from SD local DJs.
She tells the Reader that her followup album will include a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Village Ghetto Land” and she’s launching a new band called Harlequin. “Think rock meets retro meets indie meets a sideshow carnival,” she says.
