Ask San Diego trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos who his influences are, and you'd better have a notebook -- or a recorder. I managed to write down Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Booker Little, and Kenny Dorham. Suffice it to say the man is a student of trumpet history.
Castellanos received his education both in the classroom and on the bandstand. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and Cal Arts, and he has gigged constantly since moving here in the mid 1990s. He's been a member of saxophonist Charles McPherson's Quintet for years and is involved with L.A.-based ensembles such as the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and guitarist Anthony Wilson's Nonet.
The trumpeter holds weekly jam sessions on Wednesday night at El Camino (2400 India Street) and plays around town with various groups of his own, including the New Latin Jazz Quartet and his Hammond B-3 Quartet.
Castellanos will kick off the new Athenaeum series, "Night of the Cookers: Tribute to Trumpet Masters" on Tuesday, June 14, at the Athenaeum in La Jolla, with special guest New York trumpeter James Zollar (a former San Diegan).
