The "young lion" of the San Diego jazz scene is definitely pianist Joshua White. Josh was playing Mozart and Bach at the tender age of 7, and became his church's pianist by age 12.
He wasn't exposed to much jazz until his teens, when he attended several UCSD summer band camps. That's where his natural abilities and innate musicality made an impression on his instructors. Before long, he was playing with them.
He has absorbed some of Keith Jarrett's lyricism, a bit of the power of McCoy Tyner, and some of the subtle grace of elders like Hank Jones.
He plays often with bassists Rob Thorsen and Mark Dresser, and will perform with his own quartet on Tuesday, June 14, as the featured artist of Jazz Live at the Saville Theatre at City College.
