Sunday, August 7, at 7:00 pm, Joshua White will be appearing alongside Marshall Hawkins on doublebass, with percussionist Charlie Chavez at Dizzy's.
Josh is a young man, playing beyond his years, and he's very versatile. He can play the straight-ahead stuff with the best of them and frequently does with folks like Rob Thorsen, Gilbert Castellanos and Mike Wofford.
He is equally adept in more abstract settings as a member of the Mark Dresser Quintet and, recently with the Jason Robinson Janus Ensemble.
Sunday evening will find him in the company of legendary bassist Hawkins, who began his professional career in 1964 with vocalist Shirley Horn. In 1968, he toured the United States as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet. Hawkins spent a few years with Roberta Flack, and has also played with such luminaries as Pharoah Sanders.
"The musical pairing of Marshall and I has always been an exercise in spontaneity, tethered by a deep instrumental dialogue," said White.
Many San Diego jazz fans will know Chavez from his work with the Gilbert Castellanos New Latin Jazz Quintet, but he's also played with a who's-who of Latin music names.
In addition to his percolating drive and explosive chops, White notes that, "Charlie is such a tasteful musician, with a keen sense of space--it will be a pleasure to work with these guys in this context."
Cover charge is $15, $10 for students, and all ages are welcome.
