Saigon on Fifth
3900 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103
The food may be toned down from more "authentic" Vietnamese restaurants, but Saigon on Fifth outdoes itself in service and ambiance. Agreeable, efficacious staff work an elegant dining room that resembles a fine French restaurant more than a neighborhood Vietnamese joint. Saigon has a full bar serving OK (though not top-quality) cocktails, and a decent wine list. The menu includes an oyster omelet, some excellent roast duck, and a banana flower salad that's a must have; all of which are priced lower than similar quality meals from the legions of New American/Craft restaurants that might otherwise draw clients into a moderately indulgent meal.
