"Adam" by Michael David Lewis

“Adam (Beautiful Boy)” by Michael David Lewis was the most-downloaded MP3 from SDReader.com during November. Below is an interview with the songwriter.

There seem to be a lot of layers to this song. How many instrumental tracks did you record?

There are three guitar tracks recorded: basic strummed rhythm, a finger-picked track, and a lead track. The strumming and finger-picking were miked and the lead track was direct. All instrumental tracks were from a Gibson Hummingbird acoustic guitar.

Who is Adam and what is his influence on you?

Adam is my son. It dawned on me how fast time seemed to accelerate as he started growing. No matter how much we want it to be, we cannot slow time. This song is an ode [to] savoring the moment.

Tell me a little bit about your process for writing “Adam.”

Well, this was one of the easiest and fastest songs I’ve ever written. I was playing guitar while Adam was playing with his toys at my feet. He was totally oblivious to me and my music. He was enthralled with the toys [and] his little world. It dawned on me what a perfect moment that was and how I wished I could encapsulate it. So, I started writing and 20 minutes later it was done, all while he continued to play at my feet.
