It seems as if nothing is untouched by the upscale virus -- look what they did to coffee (and if anyone were to rebel and order a plain cuppa joe in protest that would be sillier -- self-consciousness is what started this whole thing). Four-wheel-drives have suffered a similar fate, being prettified and luxurized and renamed SUVs. But the real advances have been gastronomic, as if everything the boomers ate while growing up needed to be rereleased in an improved form -- olive oil, pizza, bread, booze, ice cream.
Donuts resist the gourmet touch. They are not fashion food; they are dough boiled in fat. But there is a difference among donuts, and not merely of freshness, though that is crucial. The donuts at Donut Touch are fantastic -- dense pastry, perfect crust, toppings. Though the raised variety is far from dense, it is more substantial than most other raised, more flavorful, more transporting to that average guy's paradise. Also stellar are the old-fashioneds.
