Robert Mondavi has used his celebrity status to act as a sort of unofficial American Wine Ambassador. So it was with great anticipation that the people at Chateau Camou awaited his visit. He ended up lingering for hours, and before he left, he paid the owners this compliment: "You make your wine the way I make Opus One." The remark was aimed at the technical parallels between the two wineries -- the vineyard density, the trellising, the presses. This technical prowess has produced some noteworthy wines. Try the rich Fume Blanc, the Cabernet-backed Zinfandel, and if you can find it, the Bordeaux-style Gran Vino Tinto, selling for around $11.99, $10.99, and $22.99 respectively, at the Wine Bank downtown. The WineSellar in Mira Mesa carries the Fume Blanc for $11.99 (call for availability).
